Taken is not the end
Nine out of ten short names are already gone. These are your options, in the order that usually works best.
- Another extension. Is jouwbedrijf.nl gone but .com, .eu or .shop available? For a Dutch business, .nl is the strongest, but a .com or .eu works fine and Google does not hold it against you.
- Add a word. jouwbedrijf-utrecht.nl, jouwbedrijfonline.nl, hallo-jouwbedrijf.nl. Shorter is nicer, but a clear name that is available beats a nice name that is taken.
- Is it already yours? If the name is registered in your name with another provider, you transfer it to us with the transfer code. That includes a year of renewal, and your site and email keep working as normal.
- Do you still want the taken name? Check the SIDN whois to see who the holder is and ask if it is for sale. Many taken .nl names sit unused with a trader. Sometimes an offer of a few hundred euros is enough. Do not count on a name that is in use by an active business.

Choosing a good domain name
Short and easy to say
Can you give it over the phone without spelling it? Then it's a good one. Avoid numbers and hyphens if you can. A hyphen is better than an odd abbreviation.
.nl for the Netherlands
Dutch people trust .nl, and Google links it to the Netherlands. If you also do business in Belgium or Germany, add the .be and .de too. That costs a few tens of euros per year and stops someone else from taking them.

Frequently asked questions
How do I see if a domain name is still available?
Type the name at the top of this page. We check live with the registries (SIDN for .nl, Verisign for .com, EURid for .eu), so what you see is correct at that moment. If a name is available, you can register it right away.
What if my domain name is already taken?
You will see the alternatives straight away: the same name with a different extension, or a variant. If you already own the name at another provider, you move it with the transfer code. If you really want the taken name, check the whois to see who holds it and ask if it's for sale.
Can I buy a domain name that is taken?
Sometimes. If it sits unused with a reseller, you can make an offer. The price is usually between a few hundred and a few thousand euros. If a company is using it, the chance is small. An available variant is almost always cheaper and faster.
What does a .nl domain name cost?
A .nl costs € 9.95 per year excl. VAT with us, and renewing costs exactly the same. No teaser price that doubles after a year. You see other extensions with their price in the search results.
How quickly is my domain name active?
A .nl is registered within a few minutes of payment. You can then set up DNS right away or forward the name. Other extensions sometimes take a little longer. You get an email as soon as it is done.
Do I also need to get hosting?
No. A standalone domain is fine. You can forward it to your social media page or just hold on to it until your site is ready. You can always add hosting or business email later in your account.
Is the domain in my name?
Yes. You or your company is the holder, and we are the registrar. You can always request your transfer code and leave. We don't hold anyone back.
Can I reserve a domain name without paying?
No, that is not possible anywhere: a domain only exists once it is registered. Not sure? Register it for a year. That is cheaper than losing it to someone else a month from now.
