Backup web server (shadow origin)
A second server that takes over if your web server goes down. The plans, what it does and what it doesn't.

With Always online, the edge shows the last good version of your pages if your web server falters. For web shops that can never go down, there is the backup web server: a second server with an up-to-date copy of your site and database.
What happens during an outage?
- If your origin server returns a server error or is unreachable, the edge fetches the page from the backup.
- As long as the origin server is down, visitors go straight to the backup for 30 seconds. After that, we try the origin server again.
- We never send orders and forms (POST) to the backup, so nothing arrives twice or incorrectly.
- If the backup takes over, you get an email. In your account you can see when, why and how many requests.
Which plan?
- Backup Basic: a managed server at Hetzner, database updated every hour and files every night. For most sites and web shops.
- Backup Pro: as powerful as your origin server, database every five minutes, files every quarter of an hour, and a switchover test with a report every quarter.
- Your own or another server: you already have a second server, in your own server room or with another provider. We set up the synchronisation and monitoring.
- Custom enterprise: multiple locations, near real-time replication or clusters.
The prices are shown in advance in your account and on the Backup web server page. Cancel monthly. You pay the setup once.
What do you need?
Nothing. Order in My account › Edge SEO › Security. After payment, we set everything up, test the switchover and send you an email as soon as the backup is active. If you are in a team, you can suggest it to the owner.
What it doesn't do
An error in your own code also reaches the backup through synchronisation. The backup covers for a broken, overloaded or unreachable server, not a bug in your site.
